EARLY MEMORIAL Hospital has hired Josh Woodin, a physician's assistant, for its emergency room. Having a full-time professional who can see and treat patients qualifies the E.R. to serve as a rural health clinic. HOLDEN Zackery Holley turned one May 28. His parents hosted a safari party at his home in Valdosta. Holden is the son of Zack and Ginger (Davis) Holley of Valdosta. 25 YEARS AGO June 24, 1982 THE Blakely Senior Center, which has been in operation since May 3, invited everyone to attend an open house Thursday afternoon at 213 Columbia Street. THE Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Georgia, F&AM, Horace L. Whitlock, will visit the Magnolia Lodge No. 86 Thursday, June 24. RICHARD Grist Sr., a leading Blakely citizen and businessman, active in all phases of community life, died suddenly late Tuesday afternoon, the result of a heart attack. MR. AND MRS. Lindsey Pickle and children, Lindsey Jr., Laura and Leslie Ann of Marietta, spent Saturday and Sunday here with their grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Earl (Tige) Pickle. 50 YEARS AGO June 27, 1957 REP. LEON H. Baughman has advised The News that the survey on improvements to U.S. 27 south of Blakely will be made soon. These improvements include widening South Main Street, from the Courthouse Square to about 2 miles out on the Colquitt road. MR. H.C. Hubbard, of Ft. Gaines, was a visitor here Saturday. MRS. LEWIE Stein and daughter Claire visited Atlanta the past week. MRS. W.H. Fleming and son, Billy, spent the weekend in Atlanta, Billy remaining there to visit his grandmother, Mrs. Hicks Pinson. ROYCE Richardson Jr., of Atlanta, spent the weekend here with his mother, Mrs. R.L. Richardson, and uncle, Mr. Leland Morse. MR. AND MRS. C.C. Swann and son, William, have returned from a visit to Mr. Crawford Swann and family at Millington, Tenn. MRS. J.L. Moody, well known Early County lady, observed her 88th birthday, Sunday, June 16 with a dinner by her children, at her home in the Lucille community. 75 YEARS AGO June 23, 1932 THE Republican convention in Chicago the past week renominated Herbert Hoover for president and Charles Curtis for vice president. A lone ballot was necessary for the nominations. DR. G.O. Butler, a practicing physician of Newton, was in the city Monday and we learned from him that he plans to locate in Blakely on August 1. MR. CLAUDE Beasley, of this city and Miss Ida Harvin Palmer, of Columbia, were united in marriage Wednesday in the Columbia Baptist Church. MR. AND MRS. C.G. Bostwick, of Colomokee, announce the birth of a son, Charles Gregory Jr., June 17. 100 YEARS AGO June 27, 1907 A SEVERE storm swept southeast of Blakely last Monday. Damage was considerable on the Charlie Tennent and Jim Mock places. The Scott school house was blown down. THE PLANS and prospectus of the new Baptist church in Blakely forms the basis of a three-column write-up in this issue of The News. SHERIFF W.W. Beard, of Fort Gaines, was in the city Tuesday. MR. W.R. Hodges, of Cedar Springs, was in the city last Saturday. MISS KATE PAGE has returned to her home in Augusta to spend the summer. MISS MONA COLEMAN entertained last Thursday evening in honor of Miss Quinn, of Thomasville, and Miss Willa Jones, of Bluffton. The hostess was assisted by Miss Mary Crozier and Mrs. C.E. Boyett. MISS VALLIE Alexander has gone to New York to continue her musical studies. MRS. I.S. Olliff, Mrs. T.R. McDonald and Mrs. D.W. James Jr. have returned from Tampa. MRS. W.C. Odum and Miss Kathleen Odum are visiting in Pelham this week. THE BLAKELY baseball team took two games from Dothan last week. 125 YEARS AGO June 23, 1882 COL. PERRY and Mrs. James Taylor both have presented us this week with specimens of hard corn of this year's growth. IF OUR friend, A.P. Hays, down on the river, can have one or two more showers at the right time, he will make enough corn to last him three years. WE LEARN from a dispatch from Howard Sheffield, at West Point, N.C., to his father, Hon.W.C. Sheffield, that he has successfully passed his examination. THE CORPSES of 340 Europeans have been found who were killed in the riot in Alexandria, Egypt, on Sunday, June 11. |
