Coach Amy Tucker and the SGA Lady Warriors celebrated an early Christmas Saturday in Damascus with their first win of the season, a 56-33 victory over the Crisp Academy Lady Wildcats. The Lady Warriors were down by two points at the half but, led by Kristi Williams’ 14 points, outscored Crisp 20-2 in the third quarter and cruised to victory. In the boys’ game, the Warriors lost to the Wildcats in heartbreak fashion, 40-38. Crisp made two free throws with 2.7 seconds left in the game to score the winning margin.

The Lady Warriors jumped out to a 16-11 first quarter lead but the Lady Wildcats came back in the second quarter. Crisp outscored SGA 12-5 to take a 23-21 lead into halftime. Kristi Williams was unstoppable in the paint for the Lady Warriors in the third quarter. Williams scored to tie the game up and Caitlin Cooper put the Lady Warriors up for good with a basket at the 6:15 mark of the third quarter. Williams reeled off four straight baskets, Ashley Tedder hit a 3-pointer and Williams added another basket as SGA ran off 13 unanswered points to jump to a 39-23 lead. The Lady Warriors led 41-25 after three quarters. The Lady Warriors continued to roll in the fourth quarter scoring 9 unanswered points to go up 50-25 with 4:45 left in the game. The Lady Warriors cruised to victory from there.

Kristi Williams was the Lady Warriors top scorer with 25 points. Caitlin Cooper was also in double figures with 14 points. Allison Hutchins added eight, Ashley Tedder three, Casey Foster, Lindsay Buckhalter, and Kendall Andrews two points each.

The boys’ game was a close game from start to finish. SGA held a 13-12 first quarter lead. Blake Shepard’s seven second quarter points helped the Warriors take a 22-20 lead into halftime. Shepard and Drew Bridges hit a couple 3-point baskets each allowing SGA to maintain its 2 point lead at 34-32 after three quarters. The Warriors could not get some open shots to fall and committed a couple costly turnovers down the stretch allowing Crisp to win the hard fought game. The Warriors played excellent defense against a bigger and talented opponent but could not come up with enough offense to win the game.

Blake Shepard led the Warrior scorers with 13 points. Drew Bridges added nine, Beau Clenney and Alex Wilson five each, Michael Fincher four, and Russ Williams two points.

The Lady Warriors record improves to 1-3 on the year while the Warriors record falls to 2-2. The SGA basketball teams will take some time off for Christmas and hit the hardwood again January 5th at Ashford.
