Charlton County scored 15 points in the final quarter to defeat the Early County Bobcats 15-6 Saturday afternoon in the Georgia Dome. The Indians (14-0) advance to the state finals and will take on Dublin. The Bobcats finish the year at 11-3.

The Indians took the football after the opening kick off and drove from their own 26 yard line to the Bobcat 31 before turning the ball over on downs thanks to a great defensive stop on fourth and two. Early County could not move the ball and punted to the Indians 34 yard line. Charlton then went on a 16 play drive that included a successful fake punt that gave them a first down at the Bobcat 38 yard line. On fourth and goal Charlton tried a fake field goal that the Bobcats turned away and took over again on downs.

Early County then drove from their 11 yard line to the Indian 24 on a 17 play drive before stalling. Early’s defense then put pressure on the Indians and pushed them back to their 10 yard line. On third down and 24 Dwight Dasher quick kicked the ball 54 yards to the Bobcat 26 yard line. Early made a first down before Trent George punted the Indians in a hole at their 20 yard line. The Bobcat defense would not allow Charlton to move the ball and forced a Dasher punt to the Bobcat 26 yard line.

Early County flew down the field in 8 plays to take the lead. Tracy Anthony caught a Taylor pass for 20 yards and a first down on the second play of the drive. John Micha Henderson caught another one for 17 yards and a first down moments later. Taylor found Vintavious Stovall open on third and 7 that gave the Bobcats a first down at the Indian 12 yard line after the 19 yard gain. Dionis Bryant caught a 4 yard pass on first down. Then on the next play Taylor threw a dart between two Indian defenders and Henderson made a great diving score at the :12 mark of the second quarter. The extra point failed and the Bobcats carried a 6-0 advantage into the locker room.

Both defenses made big plays in the third quarter. The Indian’s D.J. Donley intercepted a Taylor pass that was deflected at the line of scrimmage on the second play of the third quarter. Charlton took over at the Early 17 yard line and the Bobcats stiffened. Trent George sacked Dasher on second down and the Indians came up well short on third and long. Anthony Williams then blocked Dasher’s field goal try and Early County took over at its own 33 yard line. The Bobcats could not move the ball and punted to the Indian 39 yard line.

Dasher hooked up with Terrance Milton for a 53 yard gain on the third play of the drive that gave the Indians a first and goal at the Bobcat 7 yard line. But Early County’s defense was up to the challenge again and kept Charlton out of the end zone by sacking Dasher at the 21 yard line on fourth and goal. The teams traded punts the remainder of the quarter.

The turning point of the game came on the first play of the final quarter. The Indians Adam Davis sacked Taylor from behind and caused a fumble that he picked up and ran 49 yards for a touchdown at the 11:42 mark of the fourth quarter. Dasher added the extra point to give Charlton a 7-6 lead. The Bobcats continued to play hard but the Indians seemed to seize the momentum from that point of the ballgame.

The Indian final score of the night came after Donley picked off his second pass of the afternoon at the Early County 40 yard line. Lemuel Walker scored moments later on a 19 yard run and then added the two point conversion at the 2:31 mark of the fourth quarter to make the final 15-6.

“The kids did everything we asked them to do,” head coach Trey Woolf said. “They played hard and really re-presented our school and community well. I’m disappointed for them because they played well enough to win. But give Charlton some credit. They did not panic when they were down and they made some plays at the end to win the ballgame. They have a lot of playoff experience and that probably helped them in that last quarter.”

“I can’t say enough about all our seniors. They lead us to this. They went through a lot in four years. But they worked hard and got us back to the semi finals. I am proud of them and what they did for Early County football,” Woolf said.
