City council approves $14 million FY’07 budget

The Blakely City Council approved its 2007 budget at the Dec. 5 meeting at the City Annex. The $14,120,997 budget represents a $312,481 increase over last year’s budget.

A 4 percent pay increase for city employees, increased health care costs and higher gas and oil prices account for most of the increase.

In other business, the council approved a request by Blakely Fire Chief Kenneth Jones to solicit bids for a mobile fire training lab which is possible through a $312,930 Assistance to Firefighters grant. The city’s share for the grant project is $16,470.

The council approved a flood plain ordinance and adopted a resolution to participate in the flood insurance program.

The council also heard the first reading of the 2007 election ordinance which sets the time and qualifying fees for the 2007 municipal election. Qualifying fees are $108 for mayor and $72 for council.

A request was made for the city to stripe the section of Old Lucile Road in the city limits.

The city clerk announced the city finished the month of November with $200,533 in the bank. She told the council playground equipment for the park on Howell Avenue should arrive in December and that the city’s bank accounts were switched to interest bearing accounts. Interest earned will go towards bond payments.

Charles Jenkins reported the city was contracting with DOT to maintain state highway right of ways within the city limits. The DOT will pay the city $3,500 per year for each mile of right of way the city maintains. The contract total for 2007 is $90,000.

Alcoholic beverage license renewals were approved for B.J.’s Express, Boozer’s Corner Spot, By- Pass Mini Mart, Cannon Oil Corp., Day’s Mini Mart, Edd’s Oyster Bar, Krishna Food Store, New China Buffet Restaurant, Old School Club 21, Patel Convenience, Pizza Hut, U.S. Food Mart, Veterans Club, Pokey’s Town & Country Club, CVS Pharmacy, Georgia Brown’s Restaurant, JH Harvey Co., Spectra Inc., Dixie Shooter’s Supply, Ghotra Liquor and Jack’s Liquor Store.
