Bobcat fans are the best
There were so many reasons to not attend last week's Bobcat football game - wind chills near freezing, 256 mile trip, busiest time of the year, holiday activities Saturday, etc. However, when we walked out onto the field just before kickoff, the visitors' stands in Calhoun were completely filled with Early County supporters, and nearly all were standing and cheering.

Early County students make me proud
Dear editor: On Nov. 17 I had a great surprise when I walked into the Wendy's restaurant in Cordele, Ga., on my lunch break. The room was filled to capacity with Early County Middle School students. I was very proud to let everyone else in the restaurant know I personally knew these students and that they were from Early County.

The Dome is not a destination
The last time the Bobcats won the state championship there was no Georgia Dome. Atlanta's Grady Stadium on Ponce deLeon Ave. where the game was played has long been gone. The championship, the pride and memories that came with it are still alive and well. The trophy still stands proud in the trophy case at ECHS. The memories of those players, coaches and fans still warm the heart.

Cold snap's hard
I didn't cover up my plants the last couple of nights. I had a feeling, come lunch time Tuesday several of them would be limp, peculiar-colored messes. I wasn't wrong. They could have been lucky enough to go to a home that provided adequate shelter during inclement weather.

An ill wind that didn't blow
Ten years ago I asked a farmer for a forecast. Every weather expert in the free world had warned for months that a brutal winter was on the way. I wanted to hear the local "folk wisdom." The farmer said he ignored the TV and newspaper weather predictions. When he wanted to know what kind of winter was coming he checked the woolly worms and persimmon hulls in his back yard.

Cagle the new Zell Miller?
Keep an eye on 40-yearold Casey Cagle. The lieutenant governor-elect may be on his way to becoming the new Zell Miller of Georgia politics - a smart guy able to parlay a secondtier office into a launching pad for loftier posts. When Cagle trampled the renowned Ralph Reed in the July GOP primary, several experienced political watchers were stunned. They figured on a tight race.

If Allred sues Richards, who's left to sue Vicks?
The public is always entertained by watching celebrities fumble and crumble. Some recent events illustrate why this cruel and clinical voyeurism applies doubly to lawyers. I'm still an active member of my state bar. Like many who have practiced law, I'm also fed up when legal posturing becomes more about showmanship than justice.

School board considering modified calendar
10 YEARS AGO Dec. 12, 1996 ECHS LINEMEN were named to the Albany Herald's 1-AA All-Region team. Named were senior Pat Chambliss of the offensive line and senior Walter McArthur of the defensive line. THE SCHOOL Board is considering a new "modified" calendar which would start Aug.
